Intake, MT Paddlefish Central 5/26/12 Still got Paddlefish on your mind? Montana got off to a slow start due to low water but things are beginning to change. Warmer temps in the mountains last week combined with rain this weekend is sure to get the fish moving. Intake is the go to spot right now, located about 18 miles downstream of Glendive. Season kicked off with a few fish being caught at the Sidney Bridge but it appears fish are on the move and that means look for fish at Intake. Glendive has a caviar operation set up at the Intake Campground. Yellowstone Caviar will clean your catch in exchange for your donation of eggs. A win-win as you don’t want to have to clean one of these beasts and the money made is used in a variety of ways including benefiting fisheries and recreation. The two key ingredients for fast action at Intake are high water and dirty water. It looks like both are on the way. Any rain in the Powder River drainage will result in chocolate malt thick water from the badlands. The plus factor is last week it was warm out west and it takes about 5 days for mountain snow melt to make it to Glendive. Today’s forecast is 80 % chance of rain and tonight is a 90 % chance of HEAVY rain. Get your gear and load up. Intake is a great camping area right on the river. Huge Cottonwoods shade your campsite and offer protection from the prairie winds. Picture a campfire and all that is needed is your presence. You can get up to the date reports of the fish take from the Glendive Chamber. If you have fished the Confluence in ND you will feel right at home at Intake. They even offer a shuttle service. 6 bucks will get you a ride across river to some great fishing. By the time you get here the rain will have stopped and the fish will have just arrived. I plan to be there early Monday morning. With 119 fish caught so far this season there is a lot of fishing left with a 1,000 fish cap. But, don’t wait too long, if fish pile up below the intake structure it will be over fast. See ya there, Greg While you’re here check out the Catch and Release video from the ND season filmed on the Missouri River
