| Monday ~ May 25 ~ White Earth |
Today the Bomber proves itself again and with impact One out of three, that’s as good as I can remember. How many nice days can you expect over Memorial? I spent my nice day at Devils Lake and well spent it was but I do wish I could have been in two places at once. I heard it all day, “Should have been here Saturday.” Rumor has it 3 whoppers came off the Beacon Saturday. Sunday was defined by wind and today is defined by rain. Last night’s forecast was for a 20% chance of rain. This morning it is up to 90% and by the looks of the downpour they are right. I’m off to meet the guys at the New Town Marina and hopefully head to White Earth, depending on weather. It has rained hard all the way but it is actually letting up. At New Town the wipers are wasting the effort, just a light mist. Could it be? Things are looking good. Not a single boat at the ramp and with the weather like this, I’m not surprised. Chirs Sr, Chirs Jr, Jim and I load up, bundle up, and start the trip into the brisk, damp morning. Some days it’s just a short hop from New Town to White Earth. Today it’s a journey. Lines go down into 8 feet with the hope we are far enough ahead of the cold front that fish will still be shallow. Several runs and only one walleye for Chris Jr so we make a move deeper. If we can just get a couple of fish on perhaps we can sort out a pattern. Water temps are in the mid-50’s and we are in 14-15 feet before it comes together. This is getting to be so fun we forgot the cold and wind. Still no rain and if there was I’m sure we wouldn’t be here. Cold and wind is one thing, Cold wind and rain is one too many ingredients. Jim is up to bat next followed by Chris Jr again. Dad would be in the line-up by now but he graciously defers to his son. I just love taking out Dad’s and Grandpa’s as they glory in passing on their turn so jr can shine with delight. Way to go Dad. This cold front is hard on us and if I have one lure that I can depend on in these conditions it’s the 24a Bomber. Today the Bomber proves itself again and with impact. Only one fish caught on anything else even though I dug through every crank box in the boat that would run in 15 feet of water. In fact not only was it Bombers but it was a particular Bomber, in Firetiger. That one lure caught almost all the fish. I should mark it somehow and save it for a tuff day. Most likely I will lose it on a snag next trip out. Most of our fish are coming on a ¼ mile stretch right in front of the cabins on the west side of White Earth Bay. Just follow the trail back and forth and wait for the next bite. Not too tuff once you have the combination. It’s getting the walleyes to give up the information that presents the problem. Check out the low budget fishing rig this team is floating in. I just love the passion in this picture, get’em anyway you can. Don’t laugh, I saw fish on the stringer! White Earth Bay in the past has proven it’s self as a hot early spring location. The past few years things have slowed in the river due to low water. The trade off was the lake did pretty well early. In fact last year over Memorial I was fishing Van Hook and we had decent success during similar weather. I’m hoping we see the turn back to past years when a great spring bite took of in the river followed by an even better bite in the lake. Right now the river is hot!
